A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
