Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded eighty-six first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this."

Portland additionally won their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events

Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.

"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."

Other NBA Outcomes

Elsewhere, Lakers player Doncic scored more than 40 points for the consecutive match straight to begin the campaign.

After scoring forty-three points in a season-opening loss to the Warriors, the European star put up 49 scores - along with eleven boards and eight passes - as the Los Angeles defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 128 to 110.

Greek forward Giannis Antetokounmpo also had a strong performance with 31 scores, twenty boards and 7 assists in the Milwaukee Bucks' 122-116 win over the Raptors.

Houston Rockets were defeated 115 to 111 by the Detroit Pistons even with 37 scores from Kevin Durant, while Wembanyama had 29 points, 11 boards and 9 blocks in the San Antonio Spurs' extra-time victory against the Pelicans.
