Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
