Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites

Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he received the offer from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Abound

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
