Thomas Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.

One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to know that winning the World Cup demands help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about channeling it constructively. Personal talent matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after showing that he is willing to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Jude just has the edge. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must support him and build an environment which he can channel that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious playmaker in need of coaching. He has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to perform well this year but the boss was impressed by the player after how he played in Manchester City’s win against the German side recently.

The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s game in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this idea about him for a long time. In my view it suits him the most.”

He conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to representing Man City in a particular setup, with a clear task. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an more effective one.
